Taught over 2 full-days classes one week apart.

Embroider an ornate uncial letter of your choice - or motif, if preferred - with a choice of colourway. A selection of colourway kits will be offered on the morning of the first class. Each kit will contain all the materials – leather, cords, metal purls, threads and beads required for that colourway.

Jane has long been fascinated by the elaborate capital letters to be found in medieval manuscripts. Of particular interest is the uncial form of handwriting found in Greek and Latin manuscripts of the fourth to eighth century, AD. Uncial is a majuscule script (written in capital letters), having curved and rounded unjoined letters, all the same height.

Using a collection of ornate uncial letters for inspiration, Jane has drawn a complete alphabet to embroider as individual letters using an assortment of leathers, cords, metal purl threads and beads. One has been worked with gold metal threads and gold kid, on a background of vintage ivory moiré.

For a less personal option, there are also two versions using uncial inspired motifs, instead of an initial.

These small embroidered panels may be framed - perhaps in box frames that can stand on a bookshelf, or they may be mounted into the cover of an album, a journal or scrapbook. Jane's two-day handmade book making class, will include an option to make a book with a panel inserted into the cover.

If you are interested in participating in this class, you will need to specify the letter that you would like to work. The “non-initial” uncial motifs will be supplied to everyone, in the kit.

Colourway choices will be available on the morning of the first class, so please allow a little extra time to make your selection. As numbers are limited, only one kit can be supplied to each person, at this stage. As each kit will be “bespoke”, to a certain extent, the cost of the kit has yet to be determined.

This class is suitable for all.
