This small ornate medallion features a slightly enlarged version of the pomegranate from the Syrian Pomegranate Tile, worked in soft sage green and manganese purple - colours which first appeared in Islamic ceramics in the 1540's.  Combining stumpwork, goldwork and surface embroidery techniques, this circular panel is worked on an ivory silk background with silks, gold metallic threads and beads.  The design comprises a stylised pomegranate flower with detached petals, surrounded by a border of beaded prunus blossoms. The finished piece may be framed or inserted into the base of a glass paperweight.
